The pebble-bed modular high temperature gas-cooled reactor (hereinafter to be referred as “high temperature reactor”, HTR) is widely accepted as the advanced nuclear reactor technology with Generation IV nuclear system safety features. It has attracted extensive attention in the world due to its inherent safety, high efficiency, simplified system and broad applications.

China’s HTR technology has become one of the leading technologies in the world, and formed the capability of independent innovation and design. In 2006, HTR technology became one of the National Science and Technology Major Projects. In 2011, right after the Fukushima accident, an article published on New York Times commented that engineers in China are building a radically different type of reactor that some experts say offers a safer nuclear alternative. On December 9th, 2012, the 200MW High Temperature Reactor- Pebble-bed Module (HTR-PM) project achieved the first concrete placement in Shandong Province. The project is scheduled to generate power to be combined with grid in 2017.

Since 2003, CNEC has joined hands with Tsinghua University to shoulder the special task of advancing the national science and technology project including scientific research of the HTR, the engineering research and demonstrative project investment construction. It has successfully pushed ahead the industrialized application of HTR. On March 19, 2014, CNEC and Tsinghua University signed Cooperation Agreement on Further Intensifying Technology Industrialized Promotion of High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor. The two sides will continue to set their goals on safe, high effective use of nuclear energy, interact with the domestic and overseas market to realize the commercial popularization of 600,000 kilowatts high temperature gas-cooled reactor.

CNEC High Temperature Reactor Holdings (hereinafter to be referred as “CNECHTR”), as a subsidiary of CNEC, is the investment and operation platform of nuclear energy industrialization. CNECHTR focuses on HTR industrialization.

HTR has broad applications. Its outlet helium temperature reaches 750℃. HTR produces the superheated steam at 571℃,which can be applied in not only high efficiency power generation, but also petrochemical industry and heavy oil thermal recovery with the implementation of heat and power co-generation. In the future, with the development and application of VHTR, the steam outlet temperature can reach up to 1000℃ to form the clean heat source,which can be applied in steel making, coal gasification& liquefaction and thermochemical hydrogen production. VHTR with its extensive potential is expected to become one of major high temperature heat source suppliers in the hydrogen era with great prospect.

Presently, CNEC has also launched the pre-stage work for the 600,000 kilowatts HTR in the provinces of Fujian, Guangdong, Jiangxi and Hunan. It has signed MOU on the cooperation of the high temperature gas-cooled reactor projects with Indonesia, Saudi Arab, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa and other countries and regions.
