On August 24, during his visit to Saudi Arabia upon invitation, Zhang Gaoli, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of China’s State Council, joined Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman to co-chair the second meeting of a China-Saudi Arabia high-level steering committee for coordinating bilateral cooperation. On the sidelines of the meeting, the two leaders witnessed the signing of “Memorandum of Understanding on HTGR Desalination Joint Venture between CNEC and TAQNIA” by Zu Bin, deputy general manager of China Nuclear Engineering & Construction Corporation (CNEC), and Prince Turki bin Saud bin Mohammed Al-Saud, chairman of the King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology (KACST) and chairman of the board of directors of The Saudi Company for Technology development & investment (TAQNIA). According to the MOU, the two parties will work together to carry out feasibility study on developing seawater desalination projects using high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGR) and start negotiations and preparations for the establishment of an HTGR desalination joint venture, so as to deepen the two countries’ cooperation in HTGR projects and pave the way for tapping into nuclear desalination market of Saudi Arabia.
Gu Jun, general manager and deputy Party secretary of China Nuclear Engineering & Construction (CNEC) Corporation, met with Dr. Waleed Hussain Abulfaraj, vice-president of the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE), on May 15, in Beijing. The visiting 13-member delegation also included KACARE CEO and other Saudi Arabian officials. Zubimentdi, vice-president of the ENSA of Spain, and Sergio Perez Saiz, the first-class economic and commercial counsellor of the Spanish Embassy in China. The two sides held intensive exchanges on the international popularization of the high-temperature reactor project and witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation on the International Popularization of the High-Temperature Reactor between the CNEC Group and ENSA of Spain.
On September 12, Wang Shoujun, chairman of China Nuclear Engineering & Construction Corporation, and Gu Jun, general manager of CNEC Group met with Moldova delegation led by the deputy prime minister, who is also the minister of economy. They held intensive discussions on the cooperation in the aspects of clean energy projects and construction of infrastructure facilities. Both sides agreed unanimously that they will jointly support continuous development of the economic cooperation relations.
On September 8 local time, construction work of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-4 (C-4) undertaken by China Nuclear Engineering & Construction Corporation (CNEC) in Punjab, Pakistan, was completed, marking the full completion of all the four units of the nuclear project’s first phase. Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, PAEC Chairman Mohammad Naeem, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Sun Weidong, CNEC’s Party committee member and shareholding company’s chairman Li Dingcheng, as well as representatives from China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) and CNEC attended the inauguration ceremony.
On September 8, the containment dome was successfully installed at Unit-6 of Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant in northeastern China’s Liaoning Province, seven days ahead of schedule. The dome installation marked the completion of construction work on the second phase of the power plant and the beginning of the interior furnishing and equipment installation stage for Unit-6.
On May 14, China Nuclear Industry 22nd Construction Co., Ltd. (CNI22) received the taking-over certificate of the 2x60MW bagasse-fired power project it undertook, as the project passed the acceptance test by its owner, Fatima Energy Limited (FEL) of Pakistan, and was considered to meet all the requirements as stipulated in contract.
